Check out Tiger Direct.com. We bought Rebecca's laptop there before Christmas and feel like we got a great deal and a quality product. Our most recent computer came from Best Buy and I think we got a good deal on it too. Ask Dad to take you shopping. He likes that kind of thing and knows a bunch. I agree with a Mike, you can get a great computer for well under $1000 including a nice flat panel monitor. Lastly, if money weren't an object, I'd buy an Apple. But since I'm cheap, I probably won't have an Apple for a long time. Good Luck!!!
Laura and I have decided to wait until next Thanksgiving. I plan on spending most of it standing in a line outside of a computer store. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to give you any advice. What I plan on doing is figuring out all of the applications I want to use, how much memory and power they use, and then asking people who know better(mike, Dad, people who work at best buy etc.) how much more I'll need to keep it fast and nice without overkill. I think that most computers that are more than $1000 are only needed for top of the line computer games.

$1000 can get you a really nice computer. I'll post some that less than that.
