Home Owners

Hey all you home owners, and future home owners(that would be me and mike and andy and laura!) I have a question for you all. As we begin to look at homes and think about what we want in our house, I am wondering:
What do you love about your house, couldn't do without it?
What do you wish you had in your house, but didn't think about it before you bought it?

Now, I know you might wish you had a room full of money, or a indoor pool, or a big screen tv, but anything serious that you would look for if you could do it again?

In our first house we did not have a master bathroom. That is something that I cannot do without. It is one of those things that I absolutely love. Imagine, never having to move toys out of the bath to take a bath.

I like having an entryway...so when people stop by there is a clean area of the house they can be in without being IN the house. Our first house had a small area that was really part of the living room. So anyone who came to my front door saw the messiness.

I like having a breakfast room, could do without a living room. We use our dining room as our computer room.

I LOVE having my laundry room upstairs. I don't think I could live without it anymore. So a bedroom level laundry room is a huge bonus.

Allison says: a yard is a must, and off-street parking. Have to have more than one bathroom, even if it is just a toilet. Make sure that your pipes are not outside.

Jason says: you need a garage and laundry room on bedroom level. A master bathroom and a walk-in closet (which we don't have anymore).

A garbage disposal (which we don't have) and a dishwasher (which we have but haven't had in some of the apartments we've lived in). Adrianne says she LOVES!! having a privacy fence but it is not common everywhere. Mike says he wishes our master bathroom had counters not just sink, toilet, and tub. He also whishes we had more counter space in the kitchen (we have a very small kitchen). When we looked for houses we made a list separately of things we both wished for in a house. Then we put numbers by them to prioritize which were the most important and then we combined out list and made a master list of our top ten things that were important to us. When we looked, we looked for a house that fit most if not all of those things. We think everyone should do that so you can already have an idea when you look.

We've only been in the same house, but have added on. We would never go back to not having a bathroom in the master bedroom. also we didn't have a dishwasher or disposal in the kitchen when we bought the house so we put one in. One of our biggest wants is to get out of electric heating. It is way too much money. Look for gas central heating. and of course with kids you need a yard on a non busy road.

On another note, this page I'm on won't let me type a capital letter a. It's kind of weird???

Good Luck on your hunt!!!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I certainly couldn't do without a dishwasher or disposal. I can't wait for a yard. I don't know what I would do without a masterbath. Most of the homes have been listing gas heating, which I had never thought about before. Thanks for that idea. I think I will go start my list!

Adrianne, or Mike, made a really good point...pay attention to how much cabinet space there is. Do the bathrooms have counters with drawers, etc beneath? Where are you going to put your towels, extra soaps, toiletries? Count how many cupboards you have now and then you can compare when you are looking at houses. For example, we have 7 hanging cupboards and 6 ground cupboards, we cannot fit everything in them, so I know if we ever move we will pay better attention to how many we will get and be sure it is at least what we have now. Or be sure there is room to put something else to hold them.

A big pantry is important. Ours in tiny, and hardly any food fits in it. And there is nowhere else in the kitchen to put a cupboard or anything.

Another major thing for me is a powder room. This may not be a possibility for you because there are more ranchers there. I would hate to have to keep the kids bathroom clean enough for guests. (although maybe that would help me!)

We have lots of storage room. I really love that. We also have a great pantry. Our guest bathroom is the kids bathroom too and we don't have too much problem. If we know we are having guests we clean it up nice and if we don't know and someone just shows up I figure they can't complain if it's dirty. Luckily, Will doesn't pee all over everywhere yet so I don't have to worry about the toilet and stuff.

We really like our house. It is pretty old and needs some work and we would definitely have fun building a dream house someday but for now, it's perfect for us.
